You've got to be pretty hard up to steal a manhole cover!

Read about it here

It had never occured to me to steal a manhole cover as scrap.

To think that someone would put another person at risk like that for $2.

I just wonder who buys manhole covers???

You'd think it was a little shady. Some rep for a scrap metal company drives a truck late at nite through a seedy neighborhood while trying to dodge holes in the street. He pulls into a dark alley and a couple of young men run up to the truck and say "Hey man what you need?" The driver replies "I'm lookin for a steal on steel". The punks replie "I got manhole covers, I got sewer grates, you just tell me what you want and i'll hook you up."

I think they are recycling them and possibly making the resulting steel in to manhole covers! LOL

A friend used to work attending to storm drains he would have to lift the covers and pump all the water out with his truck. He was payed a lot more than $2 per man hole and still that wasn't enough, they're very heavy and it's quite hard work lifting them. He did put them back when he was done though.

Talk about desperation. Thank you Master Bush, we're all happy on the plantation!

It is quite a popular past time around here...

But believe it or not, paving slabs seem to be the favourite, expecially the old ones, get a good price for them apparently....

you mean the big trench plates? you need a hoe to move one of those things

with all the cottage industry in china, i would doubt the manhole covers ever make it to a proper recycling center.
