meh...

Save for a laptop if you need to carry your media with you and have a way to view it that badly.

A laptop isn't ideal for media if you plan on a long car ride or something. The batteries are just too short lived with the moniter at full brightness. They are also rather bulky. It would be sweet to have something like that but they are just too darn pricy for me.

thats the thing about being 13 you get birthday gifts. I woudn't go with a laptop it's much more I'll get one in 10th grade. The vision I feel is superiour to the Ipod since it has it's own speakers and a MUCH nicer screen. Despite apples claims the ipod can't play a DVD. The only reason I migh not buy it is since creative BS about what it holds. They say at 500 kbs it holds 120 hrs of videos, but I would probly have it at arounf 2000-1000 kps
so you get about 40 hrs of video(which is still insane). One thing though is you can have CF cards in it so you increase your storage. I also think a 60GB Ipod is useless since
A: who wants to srt trough thousnads of song trying to fins one.
B: WHO wants to pay $1 a song for 15,000 songs. You could but 1% of apples shares for that mabey they'll send you a compemetry Ipod.

I also like that radio funtion if you don't have any songs you want to listen to just turn on the radio. Also for color (is that how you spell it in the U.S. I forgot oops)I think the white one is hot. Yes I do live in the U.S.

I hope my PC's can handle the requirements it's odd that they say you need 64 mb RAM when if your running XP you have to have that.

I think you mean 30 GB for the creative, thats 30*1024 = 30720 MB

The amount of media you can cram in there depends on the compression and bitrate.
more likely it's 24*30= 720
720- 3000=2280 mb
I don't think they went on the lower side all compaines try to make thier HDD seem bigger.

PSP gets my vote. You will get much more for your money and a large rake of potential accessories to ogle over.

Don't expect much from any built-in speakers. They're always underpowered and tinny, otherwise the battery will die in no time at all.

I hear the screen is flawed - very dim and poor viewing angles.

However Creative might have sorted that by now, so you should look into it.

Otherwise, I would probably be better to get a palm or pocket pc - those can play videos and a do whole bunch of other fun stuff. But they do have less space for files.

Favu.

I'll go ahead and play the devil's advocate here. The device you have picked out is much more a dedicated video device than the new iPods. The iPods do music, do it very well and now do video. I hear the video works fine but have yet to be able to use one. Your device does likely have a better screen as its stated purpose is video. Apple has never claimed that you can play a DVD on their new iPods. In fact, doing so is technically illegal because of the DCMA. I would like to point out that your 30 GB device is $100 US more than a new 30 GB iPod.

A: Only tens of millions of people every year. Apple's user interface is among the best I've ever used for a music player. Some companies have halfway decent ones, but others are just downright nasty. Put a thousand songs on that Zen device you've picked out and see if it's as easy to find one as on an iPod. Chances are it won't be.

B: You don't have to pay $1 a song. I've had an iPod for a year know and you know how many songs I've purchased from the iTunes Music Store? Zero. My whole music collection is ripped from CDs. Also, albums at the iTMS only cost $9.99. It's my opinion that if you just buy the one song you've heard before that you're missing out on a lot of other potentially good songs. Of course, 100s of millions of songs are downloaded from the store at $1 a song so you've got your answer there.

I can certainly understand people not wanting to buy an iPod for many seperate reasons. However, doing so solely for the stated reasons just isn't sound. Buying the Zen because it is a better video player than the new iPods certainly is. Enjoy your new toy; you're a darn lucky 13 year old.

Reviews I've read of the Creative Zen say that, while it's easier to get the media onto the machine in the first place (since it plays everything), it is also a breeze block and an expensive one at that.

Those reviews say that you're best off with a PSP. It plays movies, it plays music, it plays games, it gets web pages, and you can buy dvd-quality movies for it. The Zen costs twice as much to do a quarter as much.

(I've only heard jeers and jokes about the iPod video... something to do with a 2" screen that doesn't even display true colour.)

(BTW#2 @ madcatmk3 - which part of ZA?)
