Close, but I voted Kirk.

When you consider ST was very low budget in his time, he did an amazing job. As did many of his colleagues.

Real mean take their shirts off, then wipe the sweat and blood off their bodies before putting it back on!

Kirk. Kirk all the way! He wasn't a pansy! He wasn't afraid to get out there and kick ass if someone decided to dick with his ship, his crew, or his friends.

Sure, the acting was over the top. Sure, the visuals were a little crappy. But I'm sorry: Kirk. Had. Balls.

Picard had tea a a snivelling Cadet. Oh, and he had this chick in a cat suit who, "felt the alien's pain."

And, if it's true that a captain is only as good as his crew, then let's look at the crew. Picard's entire bridge crew can basically be condensed into Spock.

The ability to sense emotion/read minds? Check.
The odd-man-out, alien? Check.
Strong character who keeps it all together? Check.
Scientific, analytical mind? Check.

Kirk was the man. THE man. If he had wanted Beverly Crusher, he wouldn't have puttered around and coughed and hemmed and hawed. He would have let her know he loved her. Hands down. Done deal.

Sure, he wasn't as diplomatic as Picard, but view that in context. The reason Picard could be so lovely-dovey, have-a-chocolate-bar-on-the-Federation was because KIRK had gone out and blazed the trail. Kirk and his crew had gone where no one had gone before, and turned backwater into backyard. He'd taken a wonderful crew and done the amazing: he'd formed alliances that lasted.

Picard went around and made sure that everyone played nicely. Great sentiment, sure, but he didn't have to do nearly as much of the dirty work. It was already done for him by the Pioneers of Space Travel.

What had Gene called original Trek? "The Wagon Train to the Stars."?

I agree.

I voted Picard as well he had class, he would allways let the opposition take the first shot, laugh off there feeble attempt then batter the crap out of them. The big E (D/E spec) was only ever in trouble when picard was not in command of it.

You gotta love worf though, especially in command of the defiant, his plan to ram the borg cube with the ickle defiant was just plain silly. It is a good moment though when the enterprise E swoops into battle narrowly missing the defiant sits there for a while ponders what he's going to do then all hell breaks loose when the entire fleet sends barrage's of torpedo's and phaser fire at one point, but it only blows up when the Ent's salvo arrives.

Kirk all the way - Hes the space version of Clint Eastwood. A real man, does the dirty work, and always gets the woman.

Picard is like a spacefaring Chuck Norris, and about as gay.

Picard. I like a man who can show finese, or power when need be.

Kirk, negative. If it wasnt for Spock and his rational decision making and advice
giving, the Enterprise would have been burned to its frame under K.
He was desparetly trying to impress the ladies, and coming from me, he sucked.
Although that bastage did have some fine hook-ups

My vote is for Pic.

The Defiant was armed with a "last ditch" warhead in the front of the ship that could be detonated to massive destructive effect when it went off. I has thought that Worf intended to ram the ship, and the massive warhead down the borg's throat in the crash.

IMO the defiant was the best starfleet vessel ever.

-Cloaking Device
-Ablative Armour
-Massive shielding
-Pulse phaser cannons
-Klingon calling the shots
-Quantum torpedos
-Warhead in front

Most importantly, its a gunship. No children.

Yea, but the Prometheus doesn't have the battle pedigree the Defiant has. The Defiant had a kill count, mostly off ships many times its size that was just incredible.

The Prometheus was largely untested in combat from memory.

I mean on paper, the Excelsior was brilliant. Transwarp capable and all that.

Then look what happened.

Defiant is in an altogether different class to Prometheus.

Oh, and gotta love the project development logo.

The original Star Trek and TNG are too far apart in time to say that one captain is "better" than the other.

Boy, now that's tough. I really, really like Mal. But I don't know that he's in the same league as Picard. Although that whole "I aim to misbehave" sequence from "Serenity" was about as classy as it gets, when you get right down to it.

On the other hand, Picard's "How many does it take, Admiral?!" rant from "Insurrection" was, IMHO, very well done as well.
