Although I like Picard, I didn't really enjoy TNG series as much as TOS. TNG tried to paint the universe as too much full of goodness and light where everybody gets along and works their differences out peacefully, at least up to the last couple of seasons. The real world doesn't work that way, and I don't believe it ever will.

On the other hand, Picard's "How many does it take, Admiral?!" rant from "Insurrection" was, IMHO, very well done as well.
Picard also had that great The line must be drawn here! speech in first contact!

I saw a program ages ago (and I have no idea) in which a bunch of sci-fi geeks with too much time on their hands tried to find real-world parallels in Star Trek. Aside from being a demonstration of the effect of solitary confinement on human sanity, they did manage to come up with a reasonable sounding pattern:

Original Star Trek was both the wild west and the 60s: space was still relatively new, humans relatively unenlightened, diplomacy was at gun point, ideals gave way to expedience, men were macho, women wore short skirts and the biggest social issue in America at the time (60s) was racial equality; hence the highly contrived bridge with token black woman and token asian. Basically the stamp of the future federation was there, but the people concerned were bolshy, burly and rough around the edges, needing a couple of hundred years more civilisation to sort them out. That and Kirk was seriously bad at parking. Fancy going through 3 Enterprises...

TNG was the 80s corporate boardroom. The social pressure is equal rights and opportunities at work, so there is a studiously equal mix of men and women on the bridge, along with disabilities including a blind man, a socially inept robot and a child. It has all the grey-carpeted charm of a corporate meeting centre. They have a shrink on the bridge sharing executive power with command staff. A shrink, for crying out loud? Every person in management has their inappropriate love interest, their shrink, their squash buddy and their bar woman, woohoo. And we're all really optimistic this is the Golden Age, so we're trying this diplomacy thing out and we'll gloss over the fact that we all hate each other because it's not PeeCee to admit that there are problems looming. It would harm the share price, captain.

DS9: social pressure, rise in single parent families and juvenile delinquents, as well as an admission of the reality that when two sides hate each other (those snakey ones and the ones with the weird noses and the planet) they're just never gonna agree. So the captain is a single parent struggling to raise basically an awkward brat as well as run a foreign embassy (ok space station) in a disputed zone. Aside from not simply being able to warp out of the way when the muck hits the fan, Sisko had to apply a lot more elegance to situations when he's sitting on a lump of metal with the defensive capability of a house brick. Welcome to the 90s, guys.

Voyager doesn't fit - it's a neat test to show how ideals break under pressure, but is otherwise rather bland.

Dunno about Enterprise - I see Scott Bakula and keep expecting Dean Stockwell to walk out of a white square in front of him and beat the crap out of his PDA...

Personally I'd say the relfect the ideas of the time.
Picard more modern, kirk older. Not sure if anyone else said this since I only read the first page.

In my professional opinion, Picard. I have no basis for my opinion (as a true professional would!) except that Pic is a sexy b#t*h

Actually, the Enterprise B's captain was that guy from Ferris Beuler's day off. I could never take him seriously because of that. The B was indeed an Excelcior, and it was a pretty damned good ship class. Though Scotty never liked the Excelcior, he was a miserable old bastard by the time it was commissioned anyway.

The enterprise B was indeed an excelsior, captained by Captain John Harriman, who didn't have anything for the ship till the next tuesday. No medical staff, no torpedoes, no Captain's instinct.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the poll but...I was watching a Star Trek special via sattelite feed several years back. It was at the palace in England. One of the queens servants asked Patrick Stewart for his autograph for the queen just as he was going on the air and he said something along the lines of "Tell the queen she can f--- off"

That changed how I thought about Patrick Stewart as a person.

the soyuz class was one of those 'little' heavy destroyers of the tos era ships. It looks alot like the miranda class as used by khan in the second film. The enterprise C was an ambassador class which were refitted during the dominion war and kicked some butt and gave the defiant a good fight in one of the ds9 episodes.

Edit - Wrong it was a refitted excelsior that gave the defiant a good licking

I wouldn't know where to begin looking for a link. I mean I don't remember what the special was about and it might have only been on sattelite feed.
