Sony's Kutaragi says that the PS3 should cost us more

Sony Computer Entertainment's president Ken Kutaragi is basically saying that, not only are the already high prices fine, but that Sony should actually be charging MORE for it's console.

I think that's not really the way to talk to your customers, tbh.

Kutaragi reiterated comments he made earlier regarding the original PlayStation, which he says was also considered too expensive at launch.

"Same for the PlayStation 2," Kutaragi said.
With the PS2, at the time of launch not so many people had a DVD player. The fact that the PS2 could play DVDs helped to make it look like a better deal. DVD players were selling for £150+ at the time, IIRC.

Exactly. I bought a PS2 within just a couple of months of launch. I was able to justify it because of the DVD player. DVD players were selling for about $200 at the time, and the PS2 was about $300 IIRC, so I actually only paid $100 for the game console. Not a bad deal.

Now, although you can make the same argument for the PS3 and Blu-Ray, the demand for Blu-Ray capable players isn't there. At this moment, Blue-Ray offers me NOTHING. When the PS2 came out, DVD offered better quality playback and more convenient media than VHS, without me having to go out and buy a whole new entertainment system. With the PS3, in order to enjoy any of the supposed benefits of Blu-Ray, I've got to replace my 10-year-old television, and probably should replace my 15-year-old stereo. So, instead of $500, that PS3 is really going to cost me about $2000.

Sorry, I have a family to take care of. That money is better spent elsewhere.

I agree. I'd say the vast majority of consumers have not even heard of Blu-Ray. I think only those who already have HD TV will actually want it.

The proposed $500 price tag puts a PS3 out of reach.

Besides from the videos etc from E3 it doesn't even look that good, most of it just looks like pre-rendered garbage and the other half of in game footage just looks on par with xbox 360 if not worse.

Oh n i think i've said this before. It looks like a bleeding sandwich toaster!!!

Don't you Americans sometimes forget something?
$500 isn't too much for English people. As $500 equates to about £280, I personally don't see this as too expensive.
The Xbox 360 costs £250, so to me it seems perfectly ok.....
If anyhting, us English always end up paying more?
Am I missing something?
I just don't see how $500 is too much for a state of the art brand new just released console.

We will end up paying pretty much the same figure minus 100 in pounds. IE $600 = £500 when Sony want to release a console over here. Yanks are lucky. They get their x360's for $300. How much do we pay? £280... Thanks for taking into consideration the exchange rate...

Sony are resting too much on the blu-ray playing abilities of the PS3. Sony are pushing tech that is about 5 years away from being standard on us. As Gizmo said, average joe cannot afford to go out and upgrade his home entertainment centre just for a PS3. Especially when HDDVD is going to be backwards compatible with standard DVD players. Why bother upgrading until the tech comes down in price? You can increase your collection of HDDVD's and upgrade piece by piece when you can afford it. This seems a much more viable upgrade route to me.

A lot of analysts are already pointing out how likely it is for Ken Kuturagi and co to fail with their Betamax mark II.

$500 currently buys you about £264.00.

I agree, the PS3 won't be that price in the UK. There are various factors which make these things more expensive, e.g. higher transport and warehousing costs. Not to mention that they will sell them for as much as they can get!

Goods in local shops are often the same as the VAT price or even higher. I do save when I buy online, though. If only I had some money! LOL

They do have sales tax in the US. But, I think it varies from state to state.
