Blu-ray to be compatible across countries

Sony decides to abandon regional differences between discs, players in U.S. and Japan.

Blu-ray Disc players and movies expected on sale later this year in Japan and the U.S. will share the same region code, Sony said Thursday.

That's good news, maybe it will give them a leg up over the other competing standard--HD-DVD-- for 'mega-capacity' discs. How important is this for the consumer? Players for both form factors will be hella expensive, only high rollers will buy either of them.

Maybe they have finally realised that it doesn't matter if they do or not. How long before a multi region player hit the market?

I only see it as a marketing ploy. The same with MS putting HD-DVD into Xboxes and Sony blu ray players in the PS3
