| Editorial from the front page: http://www.aoaforums.com/frontpage/content/view/1304/2/ What do you think? Will you still be using a PC in years to come or will you leave the PC world as soon as something else, something better materialises? |

| So let's be the first here at AoA and start overclocking & modding TV's and other monitors seeming the PC will soon be dead

| Well maybe if my console could do everything my desktop can do, and at least the same resolutions. Wait we already have those, they are called desktops. I only think they will become smaller, and used for much more. I cannot see businesses moving away from them, and many people I know only use their computer from email, word processing, and light browsing. Gamers will continue to utilise desktops, unless the line blurs enough so you are unable to see the difference in the picture quality. The biggest problems I see is that of buying 2 TV's, 1 for your console capable of computer resolutions, and another to watch movies/TV, there have been many times I have been watching a sci-fi divx on the computer, while my partner watches some soap on TV. There is no way I'm splashing out on not only a computer/console, but also 2 ultra high defination TV's to go with it and to watch movies. Lastly, can you overclock it?

| i think of my pc as a hotrod to tune up and work on and since you cant do that to a console yet* then pc's are gonna stay around for longer than 10 more years plus older people or just people how dont care for games will buy into a computer before a 600 dollar ps3.

What's changing now, is that the OS on a new console can be updated online. So, this gives them more flexibility than before. So, perhaps not so single purpose anymore. Quote:

In time, HD-TVs will become more affordable and soon there will be a second hand market. In time most homes will have high resolution TVs. Quote:

| All I'm doing is looking at current trends and making some predictions. I don't have a crystal ball, and could be completely wrong! Just interested to know what other people think of how things might be 10 years from now. Hopefully, AOA will still be here and we can look back at this thread and see how wrong or right we are! |

| I don't think so. People have really only in the last few years gotten used to PC's as the everyday medium that it is. I'm not convinced their willing to chuck that out the window. My family didn't get a Pc until 2000, and most people I know didn't get one until then or afterwards. PC's were beforehand thought as school/office items. I do not think people are that annoyed about Windows. Most people I speak to (and I recently asked a group of uni friends this) say they don't like the idea of a different OS, when Windows does all they need it to. They tend to, whether it be truth or ignorance, blame viruses etc on the people who write them rather than the software they exploit. I don't think this will happen. I just don't.

| Well if we look at the past 10 years as reference, change is inevitable. Look at the MSN browser for your TV. That is what I see happening for most users.

| Nintendo are attempting to do this with the Wii. They are trying to incorporate PC functionality into your TV by having Wii channels where you can check the weather forecast, view digital camera images, create slideshows, view videos and surf the internet. It'll only be a matter of time until Nintendo release a wireless keyboard for Wii so that you can use email quickly and conveniantly. I'd definately prefer having a console that boots in seconds to send the occasional email and browse the web rather than waiting for the PC to start up. Even the fastest pc's in the world won't be able to beat a consoles start up time. But then again Sky tried integrating email into their Sky TV service several years ago, even releasing a wireless keyboard for it. That flopped terribly. But it was on the cusp of computers becoming items that everyone had in their home at that point. So maybe it's about time for something like to succeed now. The Wii is most likely to succeed due to it's price point. If it can do everything a PC can do why bother paying more when you can buy a little white box that will plug into your tv and be wireless with a familiar remote controlled interface.

| Yes, the Wii does do a heck of a lot for very little money. It is sure to be a success. The browser is Opera and will be free to download initially. Sony have now said that you will be able to use a keyboard and mouse with the PS3. They're still building their Sony Network Platform, but basic access to it will be free. They will have their own online shop, gaming services, etc. Then of course, it has its own web browser for general net use. |

| Do consoles need office applications? Yes and no. Google and others already provide free office type software, just runs in a browser. So, these types of applications are already available in some useable form, without having to buy and install software. |

I can name a good 30 people who, in the past year, have completely moved away from console gaming and onto PC gaming. Why? Because it's a heck of a lot more enjoyable. Sure, there's Xbox Live and the Sony Network, but at the end of the day, you cannot beat the thrill of PC gaming. I'm sorry, but if all else flops, I know that the Gaming PC market will be around for a long while to come.

| In many cases, the games are actually programmed on PCs. even if the game is not going to be released on the PC. For as long as, the PC is the "home" of game development, there will always be plenty of titles. Microsoft obviously want it to stay that way. They will even be providing free tools for building Xbox 360 games, to anyone who wants to have a pop at it. |
