| YouTube were using a kind of loop hole. If someone puts copyrighted material on your site, then you're unlikely to be prosecuted if you remove it when the problem comes to your attention. YouTube were perhaps taking a while to get round to removing stuff. I would say that Google has bought YouTube as a marketing tool for its customers. You'll find plenty of clips on their which may appear to be posted by a random person, but on closer inspection you'll see that they've been posted by the copyright holder - to promote a new movie or whatever.
