Will be interesting to see if his next project works out - take-off from the ground using the jet wings only.

Dude,

That is great. I think birds could be a little dangerous doing that.

No doubt. Even a thawed chicken could do serious damage to the human body at 120 KM/H, and that's the low end of the speed range.

At higher altitudes, birds are few and far between. Most strikes occur on landing/take-off.

If he builds a jet pack which allows take-off from the ground, then it could become an issue.

True enough, but he was obviously flying in bird-land in some of those video sequences.

Aren't those things some kind of chemically powered rocket engines? AFAIK, there's no way that a human could hold up a wing with a turbine engine on it while standing.

They're model jet engines, made by these guys:

Fuel is kerosene.

@ Cloasters - I think they are the jet turbines designed for use in model aircraft, though they are probably still pretty damn heavy

I came across a similar video a little while back where a man had strapped two smaller turbines to his legs and would jump wearing a wingsuit.

Well I'll be hornswaggled, they are real gas turbines. Jet A and everything, the whole Magilla. Pricey puppies, too. They aren't very heavy ~2.5 kg for the bigger ones. Anyone know what the "Wartung..." 50 hours means?

Thanks for explaining the 50 hour mystery. If these turbines have to go back to the factory for this service, I'm less enthused about them. Of course, with some applications it wouldn't matter. Pay load, anyone? Nah, rocket engines would be better. I love the way that rocket powered nasties in the movies go "swoosh..boom." Not in real life, that's for sure.

I'd doubt that they need to go back to the factory for servicing.

It's probably some minor work which has to be done every 50 hours.

Given that he only ran it for 5 minutes, he could get quite a few flights in before servicing the engines.

When I used race electric model cars as a kid, I would strip and rebuild the car after every meeting. It's no big deal and part of the fun. Not jet powered, but the same applies to all model craft.
