This is exactly what's pissed me off with AMD this time around. It was pretty dumb of them IMO to do it.

Does anyone else miss the days when pc's we're genuinely upgradable?

I remember taking my first system from being a PII 233 32MB PC66 with a 8MB G100/Voodoo2 to being a Celeron 600@1008 with 256MB and a 32MB Geforce 2 without even needing to change the PSU

Now with my S754 system I made one upgrade from a 9800SE to a 6800 and to upgrade anything else in it I'd be lucky to keep the hard drives

The conroe P5W is the first board I've had in years that I actually hope to get at lest one CPU upgrade out of. Yeah you bet I miss upgrades that let me keep the good stuff and improve what was fading..you bet!

Why do you think I'm still on socket A

Yeah I miss those days definately. I am going to upgrade some time this year. But if I could have upgraded without getting a new mobo ram and graphics interface I would have. But my XP-M, memory and 6800 card are the top of the platform.

Hard to think this all happens by accident...

Socket super 7 was my favourite.

I started with a Pentium 133MMX in that thing, and 16MB ram, and by the time I'd finished upgrading it, It was beating Pentium 3s in 3DMark.

CPU: Pentium 133MMX --> AMD K6-2 550Mhz
Memory: 16MB EDO --> 768MB SDRAM 133
GPU: Cirrus Logic 4MB --> Geforce 4 TI 4600 128MB
Hard disk: 2.1GB Quantum fireball --> 2X 60GB Maxtors RAID 0

In all 4 CPU upgrades: 133MMX -> 233MMX -> Cyrix M2-300 -> AMD K6-2 333 -> AMD K6-2 550Mhz

That is what made me fall in love with AMD. After all those years, my old motherboard was still trading blows with the best of them.
