Pretty sure we have a Xeon or two in the (almost) old server. No gripes about the old server, it's been fast for me most of the time. I'm guessing that the new server will have dual-core Xeons. Getting better hardware and bandwidth and paying less? Kewelll! A BIG thank you to the heavyweight Members of the staff!

The old server has dual Xeons at 2.4 GHz. The new server has a dual core Conroe 3060 Xeon (also at 2.4 GHz). So raw clockspeed is the same, but the old Xeons are P4 Netburst technology, so there is a significant jump in work-per-clock.

We go from 2 TB/month to 2.5TB/month of download bandwidth (we are still on a 100 mbit connection, though).

We go from 146 GB of storage to 292 GB (we had two 73 GB drives, now we have two 146 GB drives).

We still have 2 GB of RAM.

There are also a number of upgrades to the software running behind the scenes.

It really is a very, very nice new rig, and the value for money is quite spectacular compared to back in the day.

For the curious, the Xeon 3060 is a hand picked Conroe E6600 and they fit any standard Conroe motherboards and overclock among very top end of their Conroe equivilants. What makes them better though is that you can call them 'server hardware' and claim them as a tax deduction, even if you intend playing games on them.

That may be due to a separate issue, Sammy. I haven't moved things over to the new server yet. The move is proceeding a bit slower than I had hoped, but we are just about there!
