Things haven't been going AMD's way ever since the acquisition of ATI Technologies in 2006. The company has been assaulted by Intel's Core-based processors in the desktop, server and notebook markets and its graphics offerings still are outgunned by NVIDIA -- even with the newly introduced Radeon HD 3870 and HD 3850.... I'd imagine whoever is behind buying this bunch of shares could be planning on spending a lot of money with AMD, in the near future. Always good to have shares in your supplier.

Hopefully the american gov' approves it (they can quite easily block the investment) as AMD really need the money, what with problems with the phenom yields, i do hope they can sell all those 9700's they've just recalled!
