Who in their right mind would want to buy Yahoo!? What has Yahoo! done for me? Am I being blind about this? I've never used Yahoo!, IIRC.

Yahoo! actually has a fairly sizeable traffic base, which means eyeballs. Despite Microsoft's best efforts, MSN is still not a terribly popular search engine, or web portal in general. Yahoo! exceeds MSN in pretty much any category you care to name, so buying Yahoo! would theoretically get Microsoft (and thus, MSN) access to a lot of eyeballs they don't have now.

I spend an extra $20 per month to avoid having MSN as a portal. Wonder if they grok Linux yet?

Nope. And if MS buys Yahoo!, within a year, every Yahoo! server will be running Windows2K8 Server instead of Linux.

It would be an expensive thing for them to do, and they'd be laying off alot of their sysadmins that weren't Win server schooled.

Honestly if you gave me a win2k8 server I wouldn't know the first thing to do with it.

Between Bill's pride, and the embarrassment of running a Microsoft company on Linux servers, they'd spend the money to do it.

You don't seriously think MSN runs on Linux, do you? Or Microsoft.com? They arguably already have the expertise necessary to run Yahoo! on Windows, if that was the decision.

I have no doubt that Microsoft does use linux in their ogranization to some extent, even though they wouldn't advertise it. I mean until recently, Microsoft Corporation was being bounced through a Linux reverse proxy cache, no doubt because the IIS servers couldn't hack it.

Something I found humerous, is that if you look up the getthefacts.com domain (microsoft's anti linux scare campaign site) under netcraft: Site report for getthefacts.com

The bottom entry shows it used to be on a Debian Linux machine.

Which basically makes my point; if they don't absolutely HAVE to use Linux, they won't, and for this situations where they currently are, it's either because someone forgot about the machine or because they simply can't currently do it another way. Either way, that situation won't last forever.
