BT bets on open development
Posted by Marguerite Reardon

BT, long considered a risk-taker in the telecommunications market, has laid a $105 million bet to open its network to application developers in the hopes of creating innovative voice services. But will other phone companies take a similar gamble? Eventually, they will. But it will take time... [Frontpage...]

Most people in the UK forget that the majority of the telephone/broadband traffic runs across BT's 20CN and 21CN (20th and 21st Century Network). BT have a history of innovating, even when products haven't been allowed to see the light of day. For example, they ran a trial of video on demand across telephone copper (Using something very similar to ADSL) in 1994. The government of the time prevented BT from continuing with the plan, as they were afraid that would provide BT with a monopoly.
