| The world changes over time. It's difficult to believe that it's been thirty years since I was in the former R.V.N. It never ended for some vet's. They don't have the comfort in the ability to say "that's OK, it happened yesterday." This happens in all wars, but the particulars of the political socioeconomic maelstrom of Viet Nam made the experience unforgettable for many of the now almost old men and women that served there. I'm very fortunate, I have the comfort of knowing that it was yesterday. The peoples of South East Asia demand to be included in any recollection of history. Hardship and horror beyond our knowing, beyond our comprehension was their lot. While individual human experience defies quantification, they should be thought of before we should. In a better world we would have thought of their well being before jumping into their lives. And saved millions of lives and suffering that is unthinkable by bowing out instead of marching in. While compulsory service truly messes up your life, and the lives of millions of other's, sometimes with death or dismemberment, I believe that a professional military isn't good for our country. That's just my opinion. Having to deal with draftees that not only resent the fact that they are press-ganged into the military, but also ask that very basic question "why are we here, loving these natives to pieces?" keeps the country honest--if not the military itself. The world changes. While history is crucial, people in the US are no longer encouraged to learn it. The old saw is always true, "learn it or repeat the same mistakes."
