AOL CDs

From No More AOL CD's :
Ok, we've been nice and friendly so far but now things have gotten a bit personal. Check out the picture below. Can you tell what's offensive about this? This is an example of how our Personal Privacy has been invaded. We now have to spend our free time contacting AOL once again to take this fictitious name off of their mailing list. For the record, don't sign us up for CDs. Just because AOL is not willing to do anything about stopping offensive crap like this doesn't mean you should abuse it.

I think that they opened it to show the "Here's the Software that YOU ordered" all in one shot....I'm sure that NOBODY actually orders these things.

My mate's flat at uni has it's entire living-room walls covered in aohell cds, shiny side out. So many of them get shoved through the doors at our uni it only took them 3 months to complete (something like a thousand discs). Unfortunately, when btinternet started to demand bt-only phone lines, they had to swallow their pride and move to said con-artists to get unlimited (free) access. Phone prices in halls are 2-3 times normal rate

Which Uni? (;

My GF's halls had BT sockets ready installed, just waiting for someone to place the order for a line with BT. She's paying the standard rate to BT for her line/calls.

Another friend at a diff uni took advantage of the fact her halls were CAT5 wired. £70quid a year for the rental of a PCMCIA network card and a years worth of network connectivity. Not bad, even if there was a firewall to negotiate!

University of Birmingham (the proper one )

There is a single communal BT socket fitted in each flat of you're staying in the self-catered halls, which may be connected, except that there you're running up against BT's 12month minimum contract (since people only stay in halls for ~9months). That's also been the problem with getting ADSL between a group so far.

The internal phone system's been sub-contracted to Ericsson (yes, the mobile phone people) who are providing pretty shoddy service at a premium rate.

However, I'm not there this year, and apparently something's happened in the newer of the flats: network sockets have suddenly appeared. They're free to use, too

How long it'll take to upgrade all the older places, I have no idea...

Hey, I like all the stuff they send.
I toss the cd and keep the case. Usually its the black plastic one's used for DVDs. Since I buy my CDRs on a spindle, you can never have too many CD cases from AOL. Remove the label and the insert, and I think their great.

Must have about 50 of 'em, but need more. Maybe I should call up and tell them my cablemodem sucks, and I want to dial-up and wait much more....j/k

That's a good idea. I think I'll open up the things and take the case before I dispose of the cd's.
