Angry Watch out for that xp service pak one! Screwed up my pc!

I downloaded the service pak one the other night and my pc refused to boot. In fact it went into a boot loop. It would go about 3/4 the way through boot up and then restart and do it again and again and again. So I tried safe mode, same thing. Then I tried all the other modes you can boot in would not work. I even restored and did not work. So I did a re-install of system files from booting up the xp disk, even that did not work. It erased all my short cuts so I could not run most of my programs on my C drive. By this time I'm pissed! I know the only thing left is a fresh re-install which sucks! O by the way, I had to reactivate xp after I re-installed the system files and it refused to let me reactivate! Said I had gone over my limit for reactivations! So I call Microsoft to see what's going on. The rep. more or less laughed at me and said that her pc crashed also when she downloaded service pak one. And that she was going to have to do a fresh re-install. Then I ask her about not being able to reactivate my xp. She said that the new service pak had a security update that would require you to reactivate everytime there's an hardware change!!! This sucks for us who like to tinker with our pc's. So that made up my mind that I would do a fresh rein stall and not download that service pak one. Guess what, my pc works fine now. Can Microsoft get anything right? I write this to warn of downloading this service pak one so none of you have this happen to you.

I updated all my PCs with SP1. Haven't had a single problem. Guess I'm just lucky.

Thanks for uploading this to aoafiles Mooky ...

I figure there will be lots of new files distributed as an alternative to the windows updates in sp1...

No problem Pinky. I figured there might be some people out there who may not want to update to SP1 for various reasons. There's no reason they should be left open to stupid hacker attacks.

I dont think having SP1 guarantees protection from hacking attacks, someone from hardocp came up with a brilliant quote after another securioty hole was found in explorer
"my explorer has got so many holes, I dont why it isnt called Microsoft Culinder"

I'm sorry to read that it hosed your machine!
There are different SP1's. I DL'd it from the XP Update site. It installed a new phone home bs for WMP, SpyBot Search and Destroy killed it with no problems.

It has caused some problems. The box only shuts down or reboots one out of ten try's. The fix for this seems too complex to bother with.

Nah, SP1 doesn't guarantee any protection from new exploits. It does, however, fix a number of known problems and exploits! Most of these can also be fixed by installing 1001 hot fixes...

SP1 protects you from one particular attack that non-SP1 machines are vulnerable to. Basically, a script can be written on a webpage that will delete files on your computer. SP1 fixes this problem. Nothing else on the windowsupdate.com site will fix it.

Well I won't be trying to download it again anytime soon. To afraid of having to go through the fresh reinstall again. I'll wait about 6 months in hopes they fix it and make sure to make a complete back up to another drive. Hey anyone know where I can download a program that will let me copy every thing from this drive to another? Sure would help. It has to work on ntfs file system. I have this thing that came with my drive but won't work with this file system.
If you were me would you do it again after having to do a fresh reinstall?
Next time something tells me to back up my files before doing it, I'm avoiding it like the plague.

From what I've read about SP1, it is best installed after a fresh install of XP. The next best alternative is running a repair install prior to the SP1 download. That is what I did and it worked fine for me.

Thats what I did from booting up the xp disk, the repair made my program icons disappear. Programs were still there just could not use most of them.

Media player 9 has caused me more problems than XP SP1. Now, I can't watch any movie on WMP, be it AVI or MPEG or anything (except WMP specific files). SP1 installed on my (other) box perfectly, no problems at all
Sorry to hear bout your problems with it though
