eBay Australia ditches PayPal scheme

eBay Australia has given up on its attempt to force virtually all payments through its subsidiary PayPal.

After looking around for an LCD inverter for my laptop (which I eventually acquired for $1) I can see why they need to try to make more money. Sales have to be down considering that most of the posts I see are those selling new goods at 50% over retail prices.

It may have cost the seller more than $1 in listing fees, unless they listed it during an ebay promotion.

I'd say ebay are in quite an enviable position, when the economy is booming they will do well, when there's a recession people may sell second-hand stuff to pay the bills, so ebay's in a win-win situation.

They use to be happy to make a good profit. Now they must be constently making MORE profit than last year. They've gone from the normal growth of the cell, to the uncontrolled expansion of the cancer cell...

Thats just how the stock market works I guess. I mean look at Yahoo, amid all the confusion about why they didn't sell to MS the fact that they are a profitable company seems to get lost.

All growing economies are unsustainable by default. In order for an economy to keep booming, growth is needed in population, house prices, food production, oil production, waste treatment, etc. The list goes on and on.

Meanwhile, we expect our homes to increase in value at some silly rate, we also want cheap homes for our children to buy, we also want low inflation, big pay rises, and cheap beer.

An economy based upon pure madness.

That's why I think that Karl Marx was essentially correct in his analysis of Capitalism. Unfortunately, history has shown us that his proposed solution, while idyllic, doesn't seem to work in the real world. It inevitably gets corrupted into something like Communism when attempted on a large scale. He is said to have remarked of Communism "If this is what it means to be a Marxist, then I'm not one".

And so we continue to muddle along.....
