Man down, man down!!
Arghhh

Just lost my XP2500 machine when I decided to remove the gfx card's (Radeon 9600Pro 128mb from Tyan) cooling plates to see what options I had for replacing it with something cooler and quieter. After refitting it (new thermal compound) and replacing it into the motherboard the whole PC refuses to boot and the gfx card just beeps at me rudely.. I've turned a 2003 gfx card into a 1970's soundcard... doh!!!

I'd swap it for another card if I had one handy but I don't. Currently I've applied for a return.

Any ideas anyone.

darn, I hate when that happens. I swear a little

Checked that there's no compound where it shouldn't be causing a short on the card?

It is possible to kill a mobo if you fire up with a poorly inserted graphics card (I should know).

Back in the fold!!

Fitted a really really old Cirrus Logic card.. now having to do all my photoshopping in 800*600 with 16-bit colour.

Good new of course is it hasn't effected my folding speed.

edit: oh and other good new is that the Cirrus card has no HSF and so runs silent.. lovely lovely silence.

Could it be that the 9600 was detecting that no fan was present and was intentionally refusing to boot as a safe guard?

If I pull the molex connector on my 5900 it will immediately lower its core speed to avoid overheating.

Doubt it the fan was spinning fan and I've had it running disconnected before and it's never complained... this is such bad timing for me what with all the work I have on.
