Pentium M

any idea on how well these fold? i might be getting one @ 1.7GHz soon.

this will be a notebook PC, so anytime it is plugged into the wall power socket, it will be folding.

A folding laptop WILL get HOT!!! I use to use my work one too fold (celeron 533) and I had to kill folding on it because it got WAY TOO HOT and I was afraid that I would going to kill it.

So if you plan on folding on your laptop just be sure that you give it adiquite ventilation.

I've got a gui for my dell I8100 (P3-M 1.13GHz) which allows me to control fan settings. I've upped the speed they spin at and lowered the temp they kick in at. Folding gromacs it sits towards the mid to low 60C which is fine and noise is low and consistant (unlike the default of nothing for 1 minutes then 5 mins of full out blasting cycle) The P-M running at full whack is somthing like 25w which isnt that hard to get rid off. I did think of creating some kind of water cooling for my laptop. It has a heatpipe heatsink with a pair of small fans blowing on it. If i could encase the sink and run water in and out via the fan holes it could be done. I'm just too lazy to even try

As for folding speed, i think they could be potentially quick, clock for clock in most apps they out run Amd chips. The banias has 1mb of l2 cache, and the dothan has 2mb of cache (newer chip) They have sse2 as well which should help with dgromacs.

as i have alot of space in my folding rack, ill put it in there. with 4 120mm fans running at 5v, that would give me about 100CFM. i think that should be enough.

Not bad..
What little I've seen leads me to believe it will fold about as good as an AXP at the same speed. One extra benefit it should have is SSE2 for double gromacs.

I now have one of these puppies in the fold (1.6GHz variety) and unfortunutly its not folding all that fast. On a project 855 its taking ~50mins a frame, (855 is a 141 point gromacs) Ye old P3-M (1.13GHz) is currently doing an 871 which is a 164 point gromacs yet its taking 45mins / frame.
I was expecting the banias to be ~50% faster than the p3 as its got that in raw speed + extra cache. Hopefully it'll get some more friendly to it unit soon (drgromacs pretty please)
I'm gonna go see if there is a thermal management software for the laptop (dell latitude d600) as its making far less noise than the p3-m which is running at 60degrees ! (thats celsius too)

P-M's lack a little in the FPU department, but should fold OK. Not exactly the best for gaming, but good for usual laptop reqirements.

Check the taskbar to make sure there isn't anything else taking up cycles. You never know. Also, make sure you have the flags enabled and using SSE.

hmm... mine does that one somewhere in the area of 20-30min/frame, its a banias core, 1.7ghz.

also, project 217, 236points, about 30min/frame.

i havent had a dgromacs on this one yet, and its been folding for about 2 months 24/6.

the 320pointers take about 50min/frame, that is the most ive seen.

I've got my laptop (1.6ghz Centrino) folding 24/7 and it eats through them like candy. It's my most stable source of WUs since I never touch it other than to check the logs every other day.

I checked temperatures they were fine and it wasnt throttling, checking taskmanager it was getting 99% cpu time and had racked up alot more time than anything else. So i thought i'd try -forceasm flag, and huzzah same unit takes 25mins per frame instead of 50!
Lesson of the day, even though console version 5 says you dont need to force assembly stuff on anymore you do !!

I would use my laptop to fold, but it would take six years to complete a 20 point WU.
486 DX2 66MHz 24MB RAM 200MB HDD
and I use wireless internet on it at school..lol

I use my laptop to fold. It does get pretty hot, but it gets fairly hot anyway. If you figure it out, it's probably more energy efficient to fold with a laptop and use the heat it creates than to run a space heater at the same time as your laptop.

...just adding to the Pentium-M discussion, DFI have a mATX boards being released soon to take advantage of these low power high performance CPU's and should be able to run with just a passive HSF!
