I just wish my parents would let me leave them on 24/7, but 18 hours a day is pretty good..

Yeah, so do we, but it's all about costs.

A computer consuming 200W of power (the equivalent of 2 100W light bulbs, or about 1.6 amps) will consume 4.8 KW/H of electricity per day. Here where I live, at 7 cents per KW/H, that works out to about 34 cents/day, or about $10/month. I think this is a pretty reasonable figure for all but the most high-end computer systems. I don't know where Montgomery's power rates fall in the national average, but Alabama in general seems to have rates similar to hours. If you could arrange to get a good measurement of how much power your system consumes, you might be able to work out a deal with your parents.

I don't think my computer uses anywhere near that kind of electricity. My guess is my machine typically uses less than 100W, as long as the monitor's not on. I think even a P4 at 3.7Ghz uses only about 90W. I leave 5 machines in my house running 24/7 and in the winter, my electricity bill tends to be around $75, and I leave my lights on all the time. My guess is that a machine typically adds about $4-5 per month.

It is not the electricity billl, my parents are paranoid about fires cuz we have a dog, and he couldn't get out.....so I am happy not to run them when I am not there..
