Indeed - I thought you had more machines, considering you were holding me off 'til I borged my work terminal (3GHz P4) Machines in sig folding 24/7 @ stock (cooling issues, due to living in a bad part of London and having to close windows during the day) + the work computer 24/7

My home pc IS my work pc, plus my gaming pc. I killed the IBM board, built a new machine around a new board, and sold it. My file server gets leased out, and cannot fold due to CPU utilization. I need a few more items for my next build, and they are not currently available yet. Soon, very soon, I'll have the production double.

Excellent

Query from anyone who's had more dealings with P4s than I have - a hyperthreading P4 won't actually run 2 folding cores well, 'cos the "second" cpu only uses idle pipelines, right? Just wondering whether I'm right not to try to run 2 cores at a time....

Details would be appreciated - as a "temp" I can't expect access to this computer for long...

i'm not too sure. i got my p4's outta IBM's, and they get "lot loads"...lots of like 5000 cpu's, and they all just get sold as 2.4's or whatever the most popular cpu is out there. most are multi-vid, because of this. They all have HT, at least recently, in the machines i got, but that is disabled in bios. Run across 2 or 3 ES p4's and they got snapped up right quick. i know somewhere in the faq it mentions the HT, but it think it's just as simple as 2 instances, but i cannot be sure.

Cadaveca, you know you can get your Fileserver folding at 50% CPU utilization or whatever you want it set too, right?

Yeah, I've got two instances running on my HT machine at work, and it keeps the CPU pegged at 100%. The machine will actually turn in two WUs processed in parallel this way about 15% faster than if I only ran one instance and ran the same two WUs in series, so it does help, although not a lot.

lots of foldign there, eh?
I cant do 2 instances, cuz I need the other 50% of my CPU.

Actually, I use the system for development (compiling, debugging, etc.). Running the client doesn't significantly affect my performance.

Just when everything seems to be going well, the Law of Sod has to be invoked. My home setup is a little weird - system #3 gets its network by connecting to system #1, since #1 has a wireless lan card and #3 doesn't (currently the only Linux wireless driver I've found that will compile cleanly in 64 bit is for a prism chipset, for which there are almost none available in a PCI form). Thus if anything happens to #1, that takes not one but two of my computers offline.

#1 lost power at some point this evening - I can't be certain when, and have only now noticed it (at midnight, local time). I have some spare hardware to check against, so should be able to identify what's gone wrong fairly quickly - just hoping it's something cheap to fix, like a bust PSU. I wouldn't mind so much if I could find a convenient way to get #3 connected wirelessly in the interim.

Ho hum... at least the laptop's still working *crosses fingers*

If you set two cores to run at 50% each, would it then be able to take advantage of P4s HT?

Don't bother setting them at 50% each, just set up two instances to run, and it will balance the cpu load between the two HT instances on its own. You'll only gain about 15% or so though, based on my own experience. Still, every little bit helps.
