Seriously Annoyed!

Okay, this is really odd, but then again, I'm not really sure what happened. I decompiled the service installer to make it install under my name. I've used that file to install my machines. I've noticed that the number of processors on Stanford's site is getting larger than the number of machine's I'm running it on. No Biggie right?

Well, somehow my recompiled version is getting put on machines that I didn't put it on. I got an email yesterday from some IT jerk at a company in Michigan saying I can be prosecuted for installing it on their machines! I apologized cause I really don't need that right now! I have no idea how anyone can get the installer off one of my computers unless there's a virus or trojan, but I can't find one. I doubt they'd really prosecute, but I'm not wanting to take a chance with that. I'm probably going to turn it off all my machines for awhile.

Anyway, I'm not sure what to do. Folding's cool, but I'm not willing to risk going to jail for it. I've deleted the installer from all the computers, but it won't help if someone's already got it. Don't really know what I'm looking for here, just needed to vent,

Dude that's wierd. I honestly would have no idea what could've caused that. Also, how did this IT guy know your phone number?
I've had a similarly interesting thing happen in the past month or so that I believe I posted about in these forums. Something about someone getting onto my computer and using my browser to try and use stolen credit cards. Yeah, I never figured it out for sure, but I turned off remote help and got firefox after that.

I assume he got my email from here since I'm folding for AOA. Anyway, I'm not sure what happened but I have no idea how to install something on a different remote network of computers. I can't do anything like virus writing, so I'm not too worried about it. It just ticked me off that someone would do it and I'm getting crap for it.

I got a response to my apology. He said they found where it was downloaded. Still have no idea how they got it, but, hey, as long as I'm not getting threatened for it...

Hmm, this is indeed strange. I hope there is a natural explanation for it.

AOA does not rent, sell or share personal information about you with other people or companies, except in some exceptional circumstances that typically involve court orders.

AOA allows an email to be sent from one AOA user to another, but AOA handles the sending, so that the recipient's email address is not provided to the sender by AOA. This requires that the sender has an account on AOA in order to be able to send.

You might want to get them to disclose where it was downloaded from, as you didn't authorise distribution of the code! This might help you track down who's being distributing the code without your approval.

Woah! Has AOA ever been ordered to give information to a court of law before? That sounds crazy.

Diablo,

Did you put it on your website like you said you were going to? Some schmuck might have installed it under your directions and then the IT department traced it back to you through your website?

No, but we have to put it in our privacy policy because we would have to provide information if we were forced to for legal reasons!

I have no idea then how he got my email (it's just a junk email I have check every once is awhile anyway).

I haven't put it on my website yet and I was just going to link here so they could find out a lot more info than I can give. I wasn't planning on hosting the installer and this has confirmed it's a bad idea to do that. RM1, I'd put a disclaimer if I were you. The guy tried to act like I sent out a virus or something that installed it.

It's resolved anyway. Sort of... They said that someone at the company got it in an email and installed in on their computers. They don't know who was doing it and I don't know who emailed it, but I've deleted every copy I have so it can't happen again from me.

Hummm... Here's a possibility. Are all the systems the same? Ive had a company once make every computer the same and had a main ghost image that they corp was copying from every few weeks. They would update one system with all updates and then ghost it for all the other boxes in the company. A possibility.
