Non-internet computer

Hey,

I'm still looking to start folding, but still don't want to let my big(ger) rig anywhere near the internet

all I've read implies that it's not possible to fold on a computer that isn't either connectable or networked to one that is...

anyone have a straight answer to this?

You will need some sort of connection to the Stanford servers to send and receive work units. This doesn't have to be more than a couple of minutes a day though.

I do think some people have succesfully transfered the folding client including work units on a pen drive, but I haven't tried this myself.

How come you don't want it connected to the internet?

My guess is because of virus/spyware/hacker attemps.

no offence, but that just seems abit paranoid, with a decent antivirus, antispyware and firewall you are more or less watertight (except, possibly to rootkits)

really any computer can be hacked if it is on the internet, if the hacker is clever enough (how do you think holes in software surface in the first place? Someone hacked it, even if they were hired to do so).

However in the words of Leo Laporte (roughly) A computer without the internet is just an expencive calculator. But if he's happy with his computer without the internet, more power to him.

As, Allan says I'm sure you can transfer the work to and from the non-internet machine using a USB drive.

All security works just fine, until it doesn't.

you've hit the nail on the head there - I've had plenty of problems with internet connections in the past, despite firewall and AVG, a little paranoia goes a long way

if the WU results are under 32mb, I can just transfer with my card readers... just a matter then of working out how to do it. (& if they are bigger I can get a bigger card)

other reasons for not wanting internet anywhere near my best machine include not being able to surf whilst someone else uses media functions/plays games; not wanting telephone cables trailing everywhere (and i have a limited budget so don't start on about wireless networks)

Here you go:

UD Monitor http://udmon.sourceforge.net/

UD Monitor is an utility for the GRID.ORG, World Community Grid and Folding@home distributed computing projects. It provides an easy way to download several WUs at once and process them one by one, without communicating with the server in between. It also has many other useful functions.

For instructions on how to use UD Monitor see the User Manual or the FAQ. If you intend to use UD Monitor with Folding@home, see the F@h setup guide. Some of the pages are translated to languages other than English.
