minor problems w/ folding@home

i am now running folding@home on 10 800mhz duron pc's w/ 256 megs ram on a t1 w/ at least 10, up to 30 more, and 2 pIII 550 pc's... one of the pIII machines is taking FOREVER to submit 1 packet... it has been running the same packet for like a week, and is only 76% done... any suggestions as to why this is? its working on a GNRA hairpin.

There are a couple of reasons why a WU would take an abnormally long time. One of the main ones is screensaver. I noticed that when I had a complex screensaver activated, one that uses OpenGL, it took about twice as long as it should have.

i just use blank screen screen saver, so i don't need to turn off my monitor when i go to bed, it goes dark automatically, and wakes up when my alarm goes off in the morning.

Depending on the OS you're running, you could possibly have background services running that are eating up CPU cylcles. If you're running Win 2K or Win XP, open up the computer management console and check what services you're running. Turn off all the ones you don't need.

Also, I think a P3 550 should finish a GNRA Hairpin in about 1700 minutes or so which works out to a little over a day.

yes, they are all running 24/7... with almost noone ever using them for cpu intensive apps, so they can rack up a ton of cpu time. I am running win2k, and I already shut down all the services i don't need, since i don't need them. I was forced to kill the folding@home software on this computer since this computer is running internet access through proxy+, and for some reason, folding@home refuses to send packets out through it. Oh well, i still have a ton of computing power working for me... 8 ghz right now, soon to be about 24 ghz

Well, that makes at least 2 proxy progs that F@H doesn't work/play well with. Lionfish and I had that prob with AnalogX proxy. I'd tend to beleive it's a pretty safe bet that F@H won't work with proxies at all. One heckuva farm yer puttin' together there.
Hopefully my router will be waiting when I return from the wastelands of Minnesota

yeah, its a pretty nice farm, in the last hour or so i jumped from rank 64 in our team to rank 54... here's the link: http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/...e?q=poseidonf4

routers rule, i wish i had a cable modem (or even better, DSL!) at home to plug a router in to, but i am stuck w/ a dialup and a 12-port 3COM switch i got a nice deal on... hopefully the network admin at my school won't catch on and shut it down, that would suck... but he's a moron so i doubt it. Bart Simpson RULES! If you use a high quality proxy designed for business networks, you can probably get it to work by creating a seamless link and running F@H through it, but these freeware and shareware proxies are somewhat lacking in advanced features. I am going to play around with proxy+ and try to get it happy again.

They don't know??

The folding power is a welcome, BUT don't get in trouble over it, as some have.

i'm only there for 2 more months, and i already have been accepted to college, so i have no worries if I get caught, besides, how could they punish me for helping to cure altzheimer's disease! So there is basically nothing they coulddo that would matter... otherwise I would never have done it...

That's an excellent point. You really shouldn't do anything that could have legal consequences. It was a real headache for the Anandtech guy and he had obscene legal fees. As Lionfish said, the power is welcome, but you should take care to cover your arse.
