There's no reason it shouldn't, and I would imagine there are probably folks in either the Ubuntu or Folding forums that can help you if you run into any problems (assuming no one here is able to help, of course ).

It should work on any varient of linux, provided that all requirements are met. I didn't see any specific shell designations so you should be good...

1: Go to the stanford F@H site and download the latest linux client to a subdirectory of your home directory called FAH

2: From the command line navigate to /home/FAH and run the F@H client by typing a ./ before the filename of the F@H client you just downloaded.

3: If you want you can write a short startup script that can run it with the paramaters you wish each time, and turn it into a service.

If you need any help with Ubuntu or any other linux distro, there are actually many people on here that can help you, whether its just a fun experiment, or a complete OS change. Ubuntu really is a nice OS, and the most friendly 'true' linux distro around at this point.

Many thanks all for the info

Will install it on one of my XP systems.

Output may be a bit down this week as its spring cleaning time and antidust time.

so new am I at Linux command line, how shall I creat a 'subdirectory'? in home. I have a 'folder' in home that
contains the 'FAH504-Linux.exe'. I can't get the 'mkdir' work as I get a message stating that I don't have
'permission' to create a new directory.

New to Ubuntu setup on:
EP8NDA-SLI
A64 3000 Venice
2x 6600GT
1gig Corsair (one more coming)
SB Live 5.1
30gig Seagate (soon to be 2x 160 raid)
MSI CD Burner
MSI DVD Burner
Koolance 601B
Enermax Noisetaker 375W

my third try at a Linux distro. I think this one is a keeper. when I get a bit more comfy with it, I will spread it around.

In that set up I would consider removing one 6600GT, as a single 6600GT is still plenty fast enough for all the fancy GFX linux can do, and having only 1 card will make the system run cooler and consume less power

as a matter of fact! I pulled one card, I did it to make installing Linux easier, didn't put it back so only one 6600 on board. it is pleanty for Linux.
I just need to figure out a few things and get it to Fold too.

yes. I made a 'folder' called folding and FAH504-Linux.exe is there, in the 'home' directory. if FAH needs to be in it's own 'directory',
I can't make a directory. I am denied because I don't have 'permission' can I run the client from the 'file'? do I run FAH client from the
command line?

You should be able to make a folder on your home directory. (whatever your username is) Then pop it in there... or I think you can play make one on the desktop.

yes, it went to the home folder and tried to start, actually in 'root'. then I placed it in home/folding. because I didn't get the familiar
windows command promp for setting up the config, I am 'anonymous' and folding for team 0. that part isn't bad as the client isn't
running anyway. I will dig around 'till I find some answers and get this thing Folding. I am getting older and a bit slow to change, I can
learn a new trick or two. and my post count is going up too.

Don't use the root account mate, its not like Windows XP where you use the admin account all the time, you just switch user to root 'su' when needed.

A directory is an element of a filesystem, a folder is a graphical representation of that directory, so for the most part its interchangable. The reason you couldnt make the directory was because I skipped over the username part.

Each user's home directory is /home/username

So it should have been /home/dabaerman/FAH (or whatever your username is).

eg. Mine is /home/Ashley/FAH

Don't use the root account unless you have to, sorry about the confusion, I just dont really think about the specifics, as I type without thinking most of the time.

You can also reference your home directory with the ~.

eg.

/home/Ashley/FAH

Is the same as

~/FAH

Because ~ is symbolic of the home directory of the user that is currently logged in. If you switch to root, then ~ will be symbolic of root's home directory.

Don't worry about removing it, just don't use the root account unless you have to. Unlike Windows, Linux will not nanny you around, and if you rm -rf an important part of your filesystem, you won't even know about it until its missing.

thanks for the heads-up. I have had a few tries at Linux in the past. SUSE9 was the latest. Ubuntu's GUI is
pleasant enough and web access is very good. what I like is the way it (Linux) uses system resources or the
lack of BLOAT. thanks again for all the help.

I've been a supporter of Suse for a long time, I loved how they included ALOT in the install. Being new to Linux for me it was a must, but with that came a price, it took a long time for it to load and there was some lag when I ran things.

Ubuntu is loads ALOT faster, and doesn't seem as bloated. I'm going to stick with it for a bit.

now Folding on Ubuntu for Team 45. if I got it right, I close terminal restart and the client should start as
