TR, I have a guess as to what might have made the Win2K machine flaky, and that would be FAT32 vs NTFS.
the box in question had Fat32 File Sys. and I am faced with another with FAT32. I should just get on with Linux.

I am in the process of pulling the plug on the last Socket A Folding rig. it has folded almost non-stop for 3 years.
it finished 676 wu's since the last format/reinstall. the new stuff arrived today. I won't sleep until it is FOLDING!

I have never heard that FAT32 is a problem, but I'll try to find out.

I'm back on a 64 bit Gentoo install and folding again. Still have a couple of things to sort out before the numbers are right. Seems the 2.6.25 kernel and I have a disagreement on how well my machine should run. 15% difference between it and the 2.6.23 patch job I had running before. I'll give it a day and mess around with the scheduler and see what happens..

finally got to read the error message and it told me that 'this version of F@H was optimizes for dual cpu systems' and that I should try the single cpu app.
so it's Linux on that box. I will be asking for help to get it Folding SMP.

Are you certain that windows is seeing both cores? Check in device manager. If the BIOS or Windows for some reason isn't reporting the cpu correctly that would explain it.

I have never seen that message but I would check in the BIOS and device manager to make sure.

bios sees dual core, windows does not. cpuz shows 1 core and 1 thread.
I have Ubuntu on in dual boot as I figure it out.

I figured as much. It just didn't make sense otherwise.

Is that an AMD or an Intel CPU? And XP Pro, I assume, clean install?

If it's an AMD you need to install the Dual-core optimizer driver on this page; I needed it for all of my Opteron servers when they were running Windows:
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Utilities and Updates

If it's an Intel, try going to device manager>Computer and attempt to update the driver listed there. If I remember correctly you'll get some choices of kernels; just select the one that is ACPI SMP Processor, or something to that effect. Then see if it detects the cores correctly.

OS is Win2KPro. CPU is AM2 5000BE Dual Core. afak the 'optimizer' is for XP. I am using Ubuntu64 and will get it going later tonight.
working around in Linux is soooo different than DOS.

After fighting with the 2.6.25 / 2.6.26 kernels and getting nowhere I went back to a heavily patched 2.6.23 kernel. Performance is now back where it should be.

I've been using Con Kaliva's patchset for a while and still cannot believe that his patchset was rejected upstream and replaced with one that just plain doesn't work.

I have to check which kernel versions I am running on my 3 Linux boxes. This makes me hesitant to upgrade.

The cpu scheduler is a disaster, what I don't know is if it scales with the number of cores. Might have to get with you if you are running a dual core with a 2.6.25 or better kernel.

I may have to borrow a dual core from someone and do some testing. My server is on a hardened kernel and has way too much uptime to start playing around with it..

Some interesting information here about SMP, and also about the new nVidia GPU client-from Vijay Pande.

Huge backbone problems in Asia cost me my ISP service for most of the last three days, but it seems to be back now.

Lost a bunch of WUs to deadlines but the farm has purged them and is chewing on new ones as I write this. Hope to start posting points later today.

What do you think of this idea?

Read this:

What do you think of Bruce's idea here?

Important note:

5.91/5.92 SMP clients [edit:and GPU clients] will EXPIRE ON AUGUST 2.

Get the new 6.22 beta here: Folding@home - DownloadWinOther

Install instructions here:
Folding Forum • View topic - SMP 6.22 installation

This client will expire on 2-2-2009. The old one will continue to run as long as the box isn't rebooted. It will not start after Aug 2, 2008 though.

If you screw up, set the clock back a day and the old client will start again.
