Arguments problem

I'm running the 2xFAH500 console and I've brought the .EXE files out to the desktop so I can add the arguments to them. I just noticed there is a flaw in that strategy. On boot, each client loads with the arguments but when they are finished with that one and pick up a new one the arguments are no longer attached. Two questions. Do they do much to increase speed? I sometimes get as much as 300 PPD without them. If so, How do I add them in a more permanent manner?

Why not just run the clients as a service? That's the way I do mine. That way, even if I'm not logged in they are working away. And I can always stop the service if I need to.....

Unless I've missed something [possible!] I am running as a service. It's FAH5 Service installer. It's running 24/7 but not with the -forceasm -advmethods arguments. I just want to know If they are important and if so how to attach them to each client.

You have to add the arguments to the service itself.

What's the FAH5 service installer? I just run the FAH client, and tell it to install itself as a service. Drop to a DOS prompt, cd into the directory where the FAH client lives, and run the client with the -configonly option. It'll prompt you with questions about how to configure itself, and one of the first ones is 'run as a service?'. If you are running the 5.04 client, it'll also ask you if you want to use assembly (-forceasm) or get advanced WU (-advmethods).

Whether or not using those is worthwhile or not is really a personal decision. I'm not sure if the -forceasm option even really does anything with newer CPUs. On older ones, it could make a bit of a difference, because it would enable highly optimized code on particular CPUs. The Advanced WU option allows you to receive experimental WU, for which you usually get more points (some times, as much as double that of an equivalent 'normal' WU). The problem is that the Advanced WUs make use of code that is considered 'unstable' and may not run to completion.

If the arguments don't add any speed or any thing else then this is just one confusing thread. I'm getting more confused all the time. You don't know about his installer? I am definitely missing something!

It's a soft that has long been made unecessary by the new clients. The thread is 4 years old and it hadn't been posted in for two years when you asked your first question

All you have to do with the current clients is exactly what Gizmo said. Run the executable with the -configonly flag, answer the questions, and it will configure itself either as a service, or not. Your choice. The current clients run the assembly code by default; there is an option to turn it off but you shouldn't if the client runs ok. Disabling it is more for troubleshooting instability than anything else. -advmethods will give you experimental WUs when available, but I doubt if there is any real development currently with the console clients now. The SMP and GPU clients are taking the lion's share of the development time.

Oh, THAT service installer! Yeah, as ThunderRd says, that's been obsoleted by the more recent clients.

Basically, you set up two directories, each with a copy of the FAH client (I'm currently running FAH504-Console.exe). Run each client with the -configonly option. One of the last questions you'll be asked is for the MachineID. Make sure that each client has a unique id; just use 1 for the first client you set up, and 2 for the second client you set up, and everything should be just fine.

And me too. problem free.

Only problem is, there's no GPU client for those boxes yet, and I don't expect there will be any time soon, unless gamers start using that "other" os.

@Gizmo: maybe we should remove the sticky from the F@H installer thread, if the author doesn't mind. It could confuse other new folders...

I got the latest client installed. Folding@Home Client Version 6.20. You guys left out a few things. Like there would be a dozen questions about something you know nothing about! And if you don't answer yes to a question that is going to be just a 50/50 shot, there isn't any way to install as a service.
I had learned enough running the other client to muddle through. There were a few that I just winged it.
My PPD picked up by almost 50.
Gizmo-You might want to upgrade to the 6.2 service.
