sevice installer

Hi everyone, its been a long time since I last posted, hope your all doing well!

Been away from the fold for a while 2, reinstalled the client today tho and will be folding 24/7 when I get it sorted. The problem I'm having is getting the clients to run as a service, so i can close the windows and still have it running in the backround. atm when i close the folding windows it stops folding. I'm using russianmissiles 2x fah5 installer.
I use to know how to do this, but ive had a brain freeze and cant figure it out.
any help would be wicked.

Talking

Hey bruv. Long time no see. Gizmo once told me "if you run the console client on windows, you can run it with the -configonly flag to run the configuration tool and it will actually ask you if you want it to run as a service. If you say 'Y', it will make the necessary registry entries for you. " and whaddaya know it worked ! Of course I was using Windows!

Welcome to the team.

That service installer is obsolete, and the version 5 client is as well. You'll have to download a new version of the client.

If you post your machine specs we can help guide you to the right client for your rig. There have been many developments in the time since you used version 5, including the SMP client for multi-core machines and the GPU clients.

Hi ThunderRd, it's nice to meet you. The spec of my current machine, which is a laptop, is: an intel pentium dual core T3400 with 2 GB of ram. Its only got onboard graphics so no gpu folding there! Still running on xp also. will smp work on dualcore is is it quad only?

Hi Chris, Its been a long while since ive played any high end games, like I just said to TR, my laptop only has onboard graphics, so you can imagine what sort of games that allows me to play! Minesweeper anyone!!!!!

Hi Daniel, Thank you for the warm welcome mate, you put a smile on my face. keep up the good work. I hope you and the mrs are doing good!

SMP=yes.

GIve it a try, the deadlines are 6 days. I don't know how many hours a day you'll run it; to make these deads about 8 hours a day should be enough.

If you want to try, download here: Folding@home - DownloadWinOther

My rough guess would be: running 24/7 with SMP would give you about 700-1000 ppd on that cpu. Normal client setup prolly 200 ppd or so. I run a whole bunch of 3 GHz d Pentiums and they do about 800-900 ppd normally, depending on the WU.

The install is fairly straightforward, just be sure not to skip any steps. You must have .net 2.0 installed under the account you will be using to fold, so download that if you don't have it installed already.

If you wind up having any problems, don't get frustrated and give up. Just post back in the SMP subforum and we'll help you out...
