Samsung SpinPoint P120S

I've just noticed the new drive from samsung has started becoming available, around the same price as other manufacturers as well which is good news.
The P80 range was THE choice for quiet performance hard drives, thanks to it's maximum of 2 platters, though this did mean a max capacity of 160gb.
The new drives are available up to 250GB, again based on 2 platters. They are reported to be about the same volume as the p80's and performance is in line with the newer seagate/maxtor/western digital drives.
I'm probably gonna get a 250Gb drive so I'll let you know whst it's like if I do.

I might just go for a quiet Sammy drive next time round...

Are they good for quiet non-rattle and shake CD/DVD drives?

They are definitely worth thinking of for my next upgrade, My barracuda's are noisy even thought they are meant to be quiet.

The problem with barracudas from the 7&8 series is that the idle noise is actually quite low, it's just seek noise thats high, and seagate no longer support AAM so theres no way to adjust this. There are some quiet 7200.7 drives though, but from what I know it's only the ide variant, and I think also only those that come from oem's who are rumoured to have a tool to set the mode to quiet or performance. I know my 2 200GB 7200.7's are nearly as quiet as my maxtor10 on the lowest AAM setting.
