I knew you were going to get me but I didn't realize AOA-UK was so close until they passed us both!

Good job everyone!!

BTW- I'm about 10 days away from ordering an XP1700. Hopefully my son's computer will be together for Christmas. He'll be getting my Duron.

Ah, sounds great! I won't mind seeing you fly by me again if you get another comuter folding!

Btw, you should rather get an XP1600+ over the 1700+. The 1700+ is a lousy overclocker, while XP1600+ is the best bang for the buck available. Most of us hit 1750 MHz easily... some hit 1850 as well. I doubt you will ever get that with the 1700+.

Your call though!

It depends... You can get a Tbred 1700+ for just a few dollars more. AFAIK, they are unlocked and should have a higher oc potential than a palamino.

Ok now you guys are trying to confuse me. I see newegg has a 1600 with a stepping core AGOIA. Is this the desired one? Any other suggestions? I'm looking to keep it under about $60.

Ah, I only thought of Palominos. Thanks for the correction.

Yes, if you are going for a palomino core, the XP1600+ AGOIA is exactly what you want.

Did you mean that you wanted a XP1700+ TBred core? If so, Steve might be on to something.

How do I know which core is which? Which one is better? I haven't been following this stuff for a while.
I've been working 7 days a week for the last 6 months so a lot of things have been on hold.

Thanks for your help. That's why this forum is the best!

The T-Bred models of the 1700+ start of with the model number AXDA. Physically, you can tell them apart because the T-Bred die is much smaller, about 60% the size of the Palomino die. There's also nothing written on the die itself. There's a little area in black on the CPU package with the stepping codes and everything.

EDIT: It's selling for about $60 right now.

If you are looking at Newegg, they clearly mark the description with Thoroughbred, so you know what you are getting. Oddly, they are selling the Tbred 1700+ for less than the Pal 1700+ the last time I checked.

I'm pretty sure I'll get the xp1700 tbred. Since I'm going to be needing a lot of stuff for my son's computer I thought I would just get the retail box as it comes with a heat sink and fan.
Here's the link.
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...ion=19-103-352

What is everyone's opinion on this?

How are newegg's refurbed motherboards? I see they have a few EPox boards in and since I have had good luck with mine I was thinking about starting my son off with one of those.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

A refurb motherboard _should_ be just as good as a new one.

I've had mixed experiences with newegg refurbs:
1 8KHA+ : bad ide connector
1 8KHA+ : works great
1 Leadtek: died after a few weeks
1 AT7maxx: works great

For the bad ones, they gave me a refund without a hassle... As long as you know how to troubleshoot, you'll be fine. In other words, go for it... and you save a bundle too.

I've purchased 8 refurb mobos from Newegg. I had a problem with the very first one. The lug that attaches the heatsink to the CPU broke during installation. I returned that one and I haven't had a problem since then. Oh yeah, don't get the Asus ones, they don't come with accessories and you need the specialized back panel for some.
