A look into the future

Just looking at the Foldmonitor e-group and ran across this. Den is working on the next generation of the software.

Many changes coning. This version is working but he is still working on the graphics. There was even mention of skins.

Den's been busy.

Again this is just a prototype in the works. Den sounds like he is totally involved though. I bet it's out sooner than he will admit.

Here's the peek I promised:

I should go ask him to make the application "skinable" so end-users can make there own graphics and share them. You will be able to this anyway, but an automatic thing-a-ma-jigger would be the ticket. I wanna make my own skin . . .

It's nice to see Den so envolved in his Perl projects. I used to get the same way back in the day with Qbasic, often sitting in front of a monitor for 6 or 8 hours non-stop just to get something typed in before the idea slips out of grasp or just trouble shooting . . . .

Here's the whole post for those who are interested:

_________________________________________

Hey all,

Well....I was getting annoyed with the old displays limitations ( item
placement, pogressbar code annoying me ) so I totally ripped out the
display code out...threw it away and started from scratch. Since the
monitoring/data code seems to be stable I figured I'd get to work.

Don't expect to see old FoldMonitor when you look at this pic...i've
been VERY busy

http://users.neosmart.com/hruzaden/f...xt-version.jpg

No, It's still not done yet. The display you see is functional, client
switching in place.
Main display does not get destroyed ( "flash" ) on each update now.

Still ironing out the color switching, but at this point the dynamic
text and the background colors are configurable on the fly. Working on
the static text/lines now.

Not completed:
- The refresh "setter" is still missing
- WU totals on the display
- Still no "all clients" view, but the work history is functional and
opens as a window docked underneath looking ok..not the best..but a
functional piece of code to work with.

oh...and not that your interested about the basic skins support
...make that VERY basic at this point.
No theme switcher or theme config reader...but those are external
image files used for the frame, buttons and progress meter pointers.
WooHoo!

I haven't run into any major problems yet. At this point things look
good. I can't guarantee this will be the next version because I
haven't finished it yet...err...I mean I'm not at a point where I can
say it's totally working.
I don't foresee any problems that will stop me from making this a
releasable monitor...but there's always the chance something could
screw it up. Let's hope for the best.

Den

****UPDATE****

Here's the latest from Den

Loading and saving of Color Themes is done. Switching of color themes
while the themes menu is open works. Lots of customization color wise
as you can see from the colors menu.

Change skin is done. Skins will be a collection of gif files in a
folder. One for
the surrounding frame and others for the the buttons and pointers. The
display
background is adjustable ( it's the transparent part of the gif..so
the canva color
shows through )

Found some limitations in the Win32 version of TK I had to work around.

I compiled a text exe version here and the crash on exit is gone.

Almost ready.

Here's the latest from Den. This is swEEEEEEEt.

Don't worry, this isn't the default skin...just me experimenting

http://users.neosmart.com/hruzaden/f...t-version2.jpg

Here's both detail windows open at the same time.

I added some stuff for the power users. You will be able to specify
where you want the buttons drawn by specifying the x/y coords in the
skin's .ini file. If you have no ini file or do not specify positions
the defaults will be used.

Added --genome command line parameter to make it genome monitor even
with the exe version

Real close now. I'm really going over it with a fine toothed comb to
make sure all the new stuff works.

Looks sweet! I'm going to get around to playing with FAH2 for Linux next week, with any luck Den will have the new version out by then. Fortunetly it is much easier to hide a process under Linux than it is under Windows.
