Main rig down

My hard drive in the main rig decided to take a dive today. Suddenly had a burning smell to it after a restart, and it doesn't spin anymore.

It is a Western Digital 120 GB, 8 MB cache, SATA drive. Recently I even recommended this drive in here. Ouch.

I'm going for an RMA but I fear the rig will be down for a week or two, so currently the XP1800+ is my main rig. I'm sure my folding will suffer from this as well. I'll be back though!

Man, tough luck dude! However, things like this are why I stay away from WD drives. I've just lost too many of them over the years.

WOW, fast RMA. I went to the store to RMA the drive, and they just gave me a new one. I should have the main rig up and running again on Sunday. Too bad about all the lost files though.

Real men don't take backups, right??

Naw, real men don't do backups. Real men sit down and manually re-enter all the data.

In binary.

With a front panel loader using toggle switches.

Know any real men? LOL

I make fun, but when I first got started in computers, my first computer was a TI - 99/4A (in 1980? Don't remember now). I remember staying up for HOURS typing in a program from a computer mag, KNOWING that if I had the slightest hiccup in power, all my hard work would be GONE! because I didn't have any way of storing the data.

Then I finally saved up enough money from soda bottles, scrap aluminum, mowing yards and shoveling snow to go get an adapter for my cassette recorder. I was in HEAVEN. Took about 30 minutes to load 4k of data, but HEY! IT WAS SAVED!

LOL.

I'll bet Daniel ~ remembers when stone tablets were invented, though.
