GPRS = 38Kbit downstream and 9.6Kbit upstream in it's fastest configuration. 3G and EV1 offer faster speeds.

Via the Astra cluster in Europe - done properly, you get true asymetrical IP routing whereby the return path for your machine is via satellite. Done cheaply, you just talk to a proxy server that proxies over the satellite, causing plenty of headaches for some programs...

Sorry should have been more specific The card is a GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA (at least when they get the HSDPA in my area). The hsdpa is rated as somewhere around 1Mb/s or so (If I remember right)...

I see ~80Kb/s now, and when I get the antenna hooked up, I hope to see faster as I'll be able to get a stronger signal. At least that is the plan Because of the shape of the river and the hills between me and the towers I hope the extra height will give me a better line of sight to them.

The problems with satellite, at least here in the states, that ruled it out for me:
1. The cost was about $80 a month
2. The equipment cost was around $300+
3. They all had caps of some type. Directway/Earthlink/etc.. Would let you download about 150 megs at ~1.5 Mb/s in a 4 hour period and then throttle you back to about 128 Kb/s. Another one called blue - something allows full speed of 1.5 Mb/s but once you reach 17 Gigs (if I remember the eula correctly) in a rolling 30 day period, they shut you down. The really bad thing about their eula was that if you exceeded the limit an unspecified amount of times they could terminate your service without warning. To me that is wrong, as you'd be stuck with $300+ worth of worthless equipment, until they let you back on their network.
4. Mounting the dish. Some marinas I've been really get upset when you mount a dish on their docks or pilings. Mounting on the boat or floating piers has to much movement for two-way internet (Ok for one way TV though).

One of the few drawbacks to retiring, you just don't see stuff running down the road anymore . Everyone I knew from back then has either moved on or retired. And these "kids" just don't respect us "old" retire farts
Oh course all of the positives definatly out way the one or two drawbacks.
