Could also be a problem with quality control of manufacturer's supply of batteries used in the new laptops...
Not that far fetched considering the problems Toyota is facing today...
Might just be a huge batch of batteries that are bad & don't last long regardless of the OS used.

I would guess that MS would have been able to identify the problem rather quickly if the batteries were the problem but, as yet, they haven't. They have reported that part of the problem is how the bios communicates with the OS.

Microsoft has promised that with Windows 7, it will provide improved battery life. However, there is still disagreement about whether Windows 7 has improved battery life or worsened it. It is a true fact that the battery information provided by Windows 7 is limited and it is difficult to conclude how the laptop’s battery is performing.
