I'd guess it would be possible to choose the colour in the final release.

Personally, I like the Sony PS3 background which gradually changes colour throughout the year.

Cool, so does this take place of a "Beta" release?
I'm definitely going to try it.
I wonder if the Windows 7 USB tool will work with Windows 8?

Yes, this is the "beta" release of Windows 8.
I've found that most software & drivers that work in W7 also work with W8 too.

I hope they have the option to restore the original start menu in the final, as I'm not feeling the joy with this "Apps" start screen.

Thumbs up Customize Windows 8 Library with custom folder icons!

I noticed that unlike W7's library's locked icons, in W8 you have the option of changing the library's folder icons!
Look what I did with mine...pics below.

I got it to work eventually...
It was a strange issue with the F12 selecting the correct media for booting.
I actually liked the Metro idea, but having NO start menu really threw me off!
I use the start menu for EVERYTHING!
without it I had to resort to using RUN so I could navigate

I can just picture the board room discussion at MS. After a bit of manic dancing, Steve Ballmer demands a successor to W7, only to be told W7 is a bit too good, and they've nothing to add.

Users got wise to the "unrealistic system specs just to boot" ruse employed by Vista, plus after ME and Vista users are actively put off by the "silly but somehow cool name on an old product" gambit. ("It's not fair! wails Ballmer, tossing a chair at a passing intern, "Shuttleworth manages it, Jobs managed it, why can't we manage it?" "Perhaps, Sir, because our product is about as cool as the business end of a blast furnace?")

It's three years since the release of W7: MS can't afford another OS to go the way of XP. Another flagship product, the XBox360 has been stalled for even longer: after all, you can't fit a lot more game onto a single DVD, nor see much more when displayed on a telly.

From the far end of the room a lone voice braves the barrage of office furniture... "Why don't we release the XBox720 beta on PC as its new OS? The kids will love it!"

It would've been less painful just to release Office 2010 for XBox. I can understand the layout for tablets and phones, but not for desktop machines. I have a feeling the businesses on which MS depends will stay away in their droves in fear of losing more productivity to their GUI*. In trying to avoid another XP, MS have almost certainly caused W7 to become it.

*GUI in this instance stands for Gross User Incompetence.

wow, that was worth the read!
Great Job Katain!
I hear the sarcasm in surround sound!

I really don't understand Microsoft either. Everyone, I mean everyone was completely thrown-off with the "ribbon" and dramatic graphical changes to Office 2007... even today... I'm still dealing with employees who don't wan to upgrade from Office 2003 because of all the cosmetic changes. I ruins their production.
I know most people are afraid of change, but I personally think change should be introduced in small doses!
Security is obviously important, but those changes can usually be made behind-the-scenes.
But removing the START Menu!!!???
Seriously???
That was my "dock" to favorite programs, explorer, network settings, control panel, documents, printers, RUN, properties, etc...
I can go on and on.
I know there are other ways to navigate and manage those elements, but the Start menu was great due to opening it even in fullscreen applications.
It was my short-cut to EVERYTHING

This what Mint 12 and Fedora 16 look like.
They are easy to tell apart as they have different desktop art ":O}

Definitely made for Tablets just like Windows 8.
When I orginally installed Fedora 16, the basic video drivers didn't support Gnome3, so it would revert back to Gnome2 which is just like the older Fedora desktops.
I felt right at home.
So if you HAVE to.... disable Gnome3 and you will see the good ole Fedora taskbars and buttons.

I'm kinda enjoying this!

Cinnamon seems a good half way between Mint 10 and Fedora 16/Mint 12

Still has a Menu, Upper tool bar, which I re-configured to lower and added an upper bar to replace it... Tool bar has limted access for Icons, they have to go to one side or another and I haven't found a way to enlarge icons or tool bars. I liked having a page that's all icons of my apps in catagories, makes easier to find evrything when new to the system.

You must be laughing if you read my post on suspend....YEARS ago I tried it when things were new and it trashed my install, so I left it alone thinking that it was a half power state and "off" would be my part in saving the planet....

I don't know how this slipped right on past me all these years! A 5-7 sec boot, I could get used to this! ":O}

You can access different work spaces by clicking on the tool bar icon or by throwing your pointer upper left, which show all your windows side by side (as many as you like) so you can see what open in each space and choose one...

Some of these things you must accept as a matter of faith. For though we are able to see and interact with these phenomenon, they cannot captured by screeeshot, any attempt to do so results in their vanishing faster than the click of a camera!

So now you know why some think me mad! But I know what I have seen and interacted with by the gods of computing!
