Aero UI to be ditched in Windows 8

The Aero glass effects have been around since Vista, and are present in the Windows 8 preview.

But, Microsoft are reverting to a flat look for window borders, etc.

"We have moved beyond Aero Glass?flattening surfaces, removing reflections, and scaling back distracting gradients."

For my money, windows aways seems to be going the wrong way... Haven't used it in a few years now, but from what I've seen of the interface, I just keep liking it less and less...

I like W7 and Aero. My only criticism of it was that the window borders were too fat and not configurable. The rest of the eye candy was no different to that which gnome users were killing themselves to get with compiz-fusion and kde4 users were getting by simply clicking, "enable desktop effects". W7's effects were subtly done and not nearly so intrusive as some compiz/kwin offerings.

Metro... it might grow on you. I'll keep W7 on the other half of the laptop for now, though.

Windows standard windows with Aero don't look too bad. But, I think thry have the right idea with using less effects, and a flatter look. It will have more clarity.

But, the worst offenders are these extra programs which come with hardware, on the device driver/install disk.

The over done visual appearance often looks terrible, and tatty - presumably "designed" by programmers and not designers.

I mean look at this mess...

"Canon Solution Menu EX" (whatever the hell that means).

As opposed to this? ":O}

OK I have to confess that I've let my dislike of MS corporate structure color my view of their OS.

But they still won't see the color of my money....

I'll try to do better.":O}

I turn off the stinking Aero effects to get a little more performance anyways. Gadgets? OFF!
Transparency? OFF
Shadows? OFF
3D effects? OFF
I want the best performance for my games, so even Windows 7 looks like Windows 2000.
I happen to LOVE the new start menu and the ripped off buttons in the explorer from Linux. They really have improved navigation.
The first thing I HATED about Windows 8 is the Start Menu is GONE!
Just GONE!
I'm handicaped. I resorted to Win+R to open folders, notepad, network connections, etc...
