I have to try tomorrow on one desktop I have at hand atm to see if it will install 8. Otherwise I'm sticking with 7 and maybe will Try Mint13.

I've heard that linux community came up with better implemented security in it's latest Linux Mint Gold version, it's actually preventing the user to log in, thus posing 0 risk in contamining the computer with malware! Well done to the open source community!

Can I install Mint on the second partition without destroying W7 boot?

sure can...
be carefull where you put the boot files. If you put them on the ext4 partition the computer won't see Mint.
I think you have to put them on the Windows partition...
It will ask you where you want the boot files and will say something like: sdb1
I'll research it.
If you accidentally put it on the wrong partition it may not boot to win 7 either. So you will have to re-install Mint again to fix it.
I made that mistake once before.
