hahahahahaaaaa thats just one side of the story! I cant say much about 8 as I haven't tried it but when 7 is kicking so much a$$ in every respect who cares? When I will try 8 I will let you know how good it is. Till then give it a try and form an opinion! |

"You pays you money and you takes your chances" I on the other hand receive my OS as a gental grace for a kind loving and generous group of people who care more about my enjoyment than I do. What does MS care about Chris, cause it sure isn't you. Sorry, if it helps, I care about you. ":O} "Mercy falls upon us as a gentle rain and blesses twice the one who gives and the one who receives." I may try re-installing Win 8 again to give it a better chance. I was very Thrown-Off with the metro interface! I couldn't find a Start button anywhere. So if I wanted to browse my photos I had to use Ctrl+R so I could get there. I know Gnome 3 is going the same direction as Metro because Tablets are the future, but please give us a "classic" option so we can run it in XP or Win 7 mode. Please

I think everyone should give Windows 8 as many chances to fall on its face and fail as is needed. They should reinstall it and reinstall it. They deffinity should not give up. MS will patch it!! This is bound to take a bit of time but as The Windows Beta for money matures new oppertunities to pay for this OS again and agin will arise. They will most certainly rename it at lest twice! Windows now wants to be on a two-year schedule, a new release every two years. Just think EVERY TWO YEARS.... who can count the tears! having to wait two whole years every time just for the return of instability. But if they wait longer people start to get use to having a fuctioning OS, makes it hard for the next release to gain acceptence. Every two years Chris...You lucky dog!! ":O}

As opposed to waiting every 6 months for a new distro to come out and then spending time trying to figure out why it won't boot on your machine?

One of the things back when Windows Vista was the latest is that I haven't reinstalled the OS (Vista64) every 6 months as most of the ppl I knew were doing. I had it working great and everynow and then (several months) I was looking at what was installed in the meantime and I was modding the settings so that the OS was responsive. ITs been years till windows 7 appeared and I gave it a try and I decided to have it running along till I figure out how stable it is. And it was! Having an OS like Linux is a massive know how task, you need to spend time and search here and there to see how to get around numerous issues that arise. If you want to use your computer and do something specific -like working with photos and software that isnt supported under linux- it has to be either Windows or MAC OS according to my knowledge. |

I plan to stick with one distro in the end for my desktop use and I probably won't be upgrading to the newest version every 6 months. Thats what I do with Windows. I will install the service packs and updates in Windows only because of security issues, but otherwise I stick with my current version of Windows on that computer. The only time I have upgraded is because I was excited to try the newer release or because I got a free copy or because I built a new computer and XP wasn't available. If I'm happy with Mint 13 and it is deemed stable in my environment... I'm going to stay with Mint 13. I'll check for updates from time to time and see if its anything I need, otherwise I could use it for several years until there is an obvious improvement (anything that helps games that is...).

If that's what happens, at lest it's a free smack in the face with a fish. Truth is I think Windows would be an awfully competitive free OS, it's this pay money for it thing that upsets my apple cart. Why do people do that? ":O}

Hmm, never thought of that... OS X is under $40. Windows is usually $300 and under depending on the Home, Pro, Business, Ultimate. MAC users already pay enough for the computer so who would want to pay more than $40? I'm sick of paying $100+ for Windows and I have 12 computers!!!! No way! Not anymore. I will either get Linux running or will use Win 7 forever!

I tried the Use Win 2000 pro forever approach. Doesn't work. MS actively seeks out devs and tells them NOT to support the use of an Old MS OS. Got then to stop supporting it in games etc. Not my opinion, but published fact, MS did this to me AFTER I paid them. They took my money then sabotaged their own, my own OS! My anger runs deep.

yeah, I remember that Dan. I'm not so bitter because apparently they are still supporting XP. Time will come! So I'm looking elsewhere and I never turn down something that is free. I could probably use XP forever with disk images, but as you know, there is a limit. I'll be stuck with an ancient offline LAN with unsupported programs.

Modern Mint does things for me that my beloved 2000 pro never dreamed of doing! If NTFS was availble for free today, I wonder how many would prefer it?

I probably won't ever use RAID in my gaming machines. But my server? I can't wait to setup a RAID 5 some day
