IDG News Service - Apple has told the U.S. Copyright Office that modifying the iPhone's operating system could crash a mobile phone network's transmission towers or allow people to avoid paying for phone calls.

The claims are Apple's contribution to the Copyright Office's regular review of the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), a law that forbids the circumvention of copy control mechanisms.

From Trusted Reviews:
The last Samsung handset I looked at was the high-end i8910 HD
which was good enough to get one of our Recommended awards. Now I have
the Tocco Lite, an altogether different proposition. It is designed for
those that can't afford the high-end stuff, effectively bringing the
touchscreen interface to a wider audience.

The FCC will soon be able to celebrate seven years of sitting on its duff and doing nothing about the problem of bird-slaying wireless towers. Even a court order hasn't scared the agency into action—Ars wonders what will. By Matthew Lasar | Last updated July 8, 2009 11:45 PM CT Both conservationists and the wireless industry continue to press the Federal Communications Commission for some response to concerns that millions of migratory birds fatally collide with mobile phone towers every year. But there are no obvious signs that the Commission has plans to do anything—despite a court order requiring agency action.
A small army of industry representatives just met with the FCC's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau on this issue. They urged the Commission to contract with an "impartial avian consultant" to "assess the state of the science surrounding avian mortality, as a first step toward filling the void of peer-reviewed data that exists in the Migratory Bird rulemaking proceeding." The meeting included reps from CTIA - The Wireless Association, the National Association of Broadcasters, and the National Association of Tower Erectors. [ARS Technica...] [Comments...] |
