Android app will survey 2G and 3G coverage

In an ambitious move the beeb wants UK Android phone users to download, and run, a special app which will monitor and report the availability of 3G and 2G connections, wherever the handset is used.

Presently, the only coverage maps are provided by the mobile phone operators, and these are perhaps not so accurate.

Producing a reliable map is not so easy, because signals can be impeded when indoors, especially in buildings with masonry walls, and reflective heat insulation.

Find out more on this project, here.
