Page 5 of 9 On-board audio chipMost motherboards feature on-board audio, this particular chip is an ALC850 with AC97 codec. The presence of this little chip negates the requirement to have an add-on sound card. However, most audio enthusiasts will most likey disable this chip in the BIOS in preference for a sound card. The ALC850 is a good all round sound chip supporting up to audio 8 channels, often referred to as 7.1 sound. This chip controls both output and input of sound signals, it can drive an amplifier, headphones and microphone. The chip is hooked-up to the audio connectors on the rear of the motherboard. In order to function, the operating system needs to have the correct software driver installed. These drivers would normally be supplied with the motherboard and are often updated. The speaker set-up and other configuration can be changed via the Windows Control Panel. A Realtek audio chip Close-up of an ALC850 AC 97 chip Audio driversDownload AC97 drivers from AOA Files.
