Page 1 of 4 As a fan of LOTR I thought it was about time I took a look at one of the many games now available. The Battle for Middle Earth was produced using the Command & Conquer Generals Sage 3D game engine. Sounds like a winning combination, but is it? Read the review here at AOA.
Title: The Lord of the Rings : The Battle for Middle-Earth Genre: Strategy, Solo & Multiplayer Published by: EA Games Release Date: Out now Minimum System Requirements O/S: Windows 2000 & XP Processor: 1.3 Ghz Memory: 256 MB RAM Video Card: 32MB Direct3D Sound: DX 9.0b compatible This game is based on the Lord of the Rings books with many elements taken from the recent blockbusting movies. It allows you to take command of the heros and armies of Middle-Earth. The game play is similar to that of other games of this type, so most will be be able to get to grips with the controls quite quickly. Game Basics The main elements which the player may control are buildings, armies and members of The Fellowship such as Gandalf. The elements available vary according to the mission or game type being played. There is a solo mode, multiplayer mode (LAN or Internet) and skirmish game type. I will mainly be looking at the solo aspect of this game here. Game menu Missions can be selected from the campaign map which is known as The Living World Map. This is an overhead view of Middle-Earth which is indeed alive and looks quite realistic with some nice looking animated trees and clouds. There's a picture of it below. It is impossible to appreciate how well made the animations in this game are from still screen shots, so you'll just have to take my word for it! The Living World Map At the start of the campaign we can choose to play as either good or evil. This does add value to the solo play because we can play it twice over. Next we'll take a look at the game play during individual missions.
