DigiTimes AMD to launch final Athlon X2 6400+ at 3.2GHz Over the next few weeks AMD are going to launch there response to the Core 2 duo E6850. There response is the 6400+ X2, its supposidly a 3.2GHz part with 2x 1Meg of L2 cache. This has potential to be a good dual core chip, alas its a 90nM part! which means it will be an expensive part for AMD to make, its going to be thirsty on ye old power and 3.2GHz is going to be about the wall for the chip overclocking is expected to be severely limited. Whilst the far more expensive E6850 is going to scream along at 4GHz+ when overclocked.
To make matters worse the on going tweaks to the intel 'core' infrastructure (P35 / 1333 fsb / DDR3 etc) mean that it just scales better with clockspeed. Even though the amd core has nearly a 10% clockspeed advantage, early benchmarks put it 10-15% slower than the intel chip. Phenom, please live upto your name and start to turn the tide of performance More here
