Review: Stronghold 2 (PC)
Campaign Play
Other Modes and Conclusion

Multiplayer

I've attempted a few online multiplayer games and unfortunately the game bombed-out to the main menu after about 10 minutes of play. I visited the Stronghold forum and discovered that many other players aer experiencing the same problem. This was happening with the 1.1 patched version. Hopefully, FireFly will release another patch soon which fixes this. Quite disappointing because multiplayer was good fun whilst it lasted!

Sim Campaign

This mode follows "The Path of Peace" and allows you to focus on on economic based challenges with liitle or no battling with enemies. Quite useful for learning how things work without too much interruption.

Free Build Mode

In this mode you can build to your heart's content without any preset mission objectives. You can, at any point, trigger any enemy attack upon your creation. So, free build is very handy for testing out castle designs to see if they can withstand attacks.

Custom Maps

Stronghold 2 has a built-in map editor which allows you to create your own maps. Further custom maps can be downloaded from the Net.

Stone quarry
An animated stone quarry.

Stock pile
Stone and resources are stored in the stock pile.
Conclusion

Currently the game is let down by a buggy multiplayer mode which will hopefully be fixed in a future patch. On the upside the Campaign Mode is very good and will keep me occupied whilst waiting on another patch.

The new 3D engine is a vast improvement on the earlier Stronghold. Be aware that a good high spec PC will be needed for maximum eye candy.

I can recommend this game, but you might want to keep an eye on the forum thread for this game. I will post a message when a further patch is released containing multiplayer fixes.

Forum discussion thread is here.
