AOA's Jedi Rondog has been battling it out Commando style in this latest installment from Lucas Arts. Click on the link below to read his review of this FPS PC game.
After completing about half of Star Wars Republic Commando, which is
the newest game in the Star Wars series. I’ve decided to review it, so
I can review it without being able to spoil the ending for those who
haven’t finished it yet.
Republic Commando is centered on the idea that you are the leader of
a squad of four of the Republic’s most deadly warriors, Republic
Commandos. Your squad is known as Delta Squad. Always first in and
always last out! The game is set during the Clone Wars. In fact, your
first mission is to infiltrate and bring down a Geonosian Spire, during
the opening battle which we see happen towards the end of Episode II:
The Attack Of The Clones.

The game while being a traditional FPS, of ‘go this way, and shoot
this, then do that’, it tends to suit this game, because you are a
soldier of the Republic trained as a deadly weapon to defend the safety
of the Republic at all costs. You receive mission updates from mission
command.
Seeing how this is a squad-based game, lets take a look at the main characters:
Delta Three-Eight:
You, the boss, the big cheese, the head honcho, the man who gives
orders. You have the respect and loyalty of your squadron; they
follow your orders without question regardless of the results.
Delta Four-Oh:
Fixer, your second in command, he always goes by the book and urges
the men on during the heat of battle when things get rough. The
squads tech genius, hack computers, unlock a door, Fixer’s your
man.
Delta Oh-Seven:
Some soldiers fight because they have to, some fight for honor, Sev,
fight because he likes it. Sev is cold, methodical, efficient killer,
and does so without prejudice or remorse. So he’s the best man
to have beside you after the 10 Super Battle Droids walk through the
door ahead.
Delta Six-Two:
War does funny things to people, apparently no told this to Scorch.
He’s your squads’ locale comedian, dropping one-liners at
the most inappropriate times. He has his uses though, if it doesn’t
blow holes in at least 5 walls an hour he gets grumpy.
This game features a
fully functional multiplayer mode, including the usual, Internet, and
local area network forms of play. Allowing you to kill complete
strangers, or massacre your mates in a local free-for-all.
The graphics in this
game set a new standard for Star Wars games; Battlefront will have to
perform exceedingly well to beat Republic Commando graphically. The
HUD is especially well designed showing all necessary information
while not over-crowding the screen.

- Gotta love the squads plentiful commentary
- Straight forward
- Plenty to do
- Simple
- New sounds in the Star Wars galaxy, brilliant character voices
|
- Not as many weapons available as most FPS games
- Little replay factor
|
Beautifully crafted
game, stunning graphics, and new sounds all around. If you like FPS,
this game is a must. Little room for replay, but a great game
none the less. Have yet to experience multiplayer, but if its anything
like Battlefront, it will be a winner on the MP front.
