ArsTechnica AMD's new triple-core processor (codenamed Toliman) is the next step in a series of product refreshes intended to improve the smaller CPU manufacturer's competitive standing against Intel. The new Phenom X3 processors debut today at 2.1GHz, 2.3GHz, and 2.4GHz clockspeeds, and at prices of $145, $165, and $195 respectively. AMD's initial triple-core announcement was met with a mixture of skepticism and curiosity. The potential benefit of Toliman is clear—it's a three-core product that matches Intel's dual-core prices could improve AMD's performance-per-watt compared to the Core 2 Duo, while allowing the company to recycle its native quad-core Phenoms that came out of manufacturing with a single faulty core. The question, however, is whether or not a triple-core processor would demonstrate a compelling price/performance ratio when compared to both Intel's and AMD's product lines. [Comments...]
