There hasn't been much in the way of major breakthroughs in gaming laptop technology since the introduction of mobile versions of Nvidia's GeForce 8800 graphics card, so the latest crop of gaming laptops are more about perfecting the balance of price and performance, rather than reinventing the wheel.

We're big fans of Gateway's budget 17-inch FX laptops, the current version of which is the P-6860FX. For between $1,100 and $1,350 (depending on occasional sales), you can't get a better gaming laptop for the price. Its tricked-out $3,000 cousin, the P-172X FX, isn't bad either.
