The Samsung SpinPoint P Series drives offer capacities ranging from 40 GB ultra-thin formats to 250GB desktop formats.  In all cases, they emphasize good performance figures while maintaining low operating noise.

With the growing demands for storage in a computer, it came time to add another drive in my setup. I was already running a WD Raptor for my OS and games, and I had a couple of slower PATA drives for added space after the death of my Maxtor 80GB a while back. My Raptor has been and still is serving me well, so I figured another SATA was in order. I was not expecting the same performance on a 7200-RPM drive as I got from my10000-RPM drive, but my hopes were high.

After a little research and a lot of help from the great members of AOA, I decided on a Samsung Spinpoint 160 GB drive. I ordered the drive from Newegg.com for the low price of $59.99 Shipped. As always Newegg got it to me fast. Let’s take a look.

The specs:

  • Formatted Capacity : 160.0 GB
  • Native Serial ATA (3.0Gbps) with Native Command Queuing (NCQ)
  • Fluid Dynamic Bearing Spindle Motor Technology
  • High Speed Dual Digital Signal Processor (DSP) Based Architecture
  • ATA SMART Compliant
  • ATA Security Mode Feature Set
  • ATA Host Protected Area Feature Set
  • ATA Automatic Acoustic Management Feature Set
  • ATA 48-bit Address Feature Set
  • ATA Streaming Feature Set
  • ATA Power Up In Standby Feature Set
  • ATA Device Configuration Overlay Feature Set
  • Permuted RLL/ECC On-The-Fly Error Correction
  • RoHS-compliant
  • NoiseGuard™
  • SilentSeek™
  • Hot-Plug & Hot-Swap capable

The drive arrived in a plain brown box wrapped very securely. It came with a SATA power cable adapter. This is not something I expected. Many SATA drives still have accommodations for both 4-pin molex and SATA power connections. The Samsung drive only supports SATA power. No problem for those of you with newer power supplies that have SATA support.
