How to Fix a Noisy Northbridge Fan... Print
Written by Daniel

RussianMissile1 Shows us the way to go...

On many Abit motherboards (and probably many other manufacturers as well), the northbridge fan is the first component to begin to fail.

The northbrigde (NB) fan slowly begins to develop a grinding noise and slowly becomes the noisiest component in your system. The flimsy sleeve bearing of the fan itself may not always be at fault.

Sometimes (and in my case as well), the fan's heatsink in which it is enclosed is at fault. The fins of the fan rub against the housing, creating the grinding noise.

The solution: Remove the top fan "finger guard."
